During the corona pandemic, childhood cancer sufferer Elias Petersson has had to stay home from school, but the school robot has helped him follow along in the lessons. The robot has stood in his place in the classroom and filmed the lessons - and sometimes it has been allowed to join him on breaks.
It is a sunny afternoon and Elias, age 10, has just finished school. It was held outdoors so he could join in celebrating the summer holidays with his classmates. During the spring, he has hardly been to school at all. Instead, he has followed along from home with the help of the school robot AV1, which was introduced in Sweden by the Children's Cancer Foundation.
The robot has been standing in the classroom and filming the lessons. Everything it "sees", Elias can see from home in real time on a small reading tablet.
It has worked very well. The robot has a camera in its forehead and can spin its head, says Elias and explains that he can control the robot so that it "looks" at what he wants to see.
